Main Roads and Routes in Wales Help

Wales offers some of the most picturesque drives in all of Britain. Here, you will not just look forward to the destination, but the journey as well. Here are a some of the best main roads and routes in Wales for you to consider:

A470 – South

If you are going to be driving down one road in Wales, make sure it is the A470. This is the biggest road in Wales and runs from Conwy to Cardiff. That’s 186 miles from one coast to the other. Don’t forget to look out for the Brecon Beacons and if possible, try and match your trip with a performance of the Royal Welsh Show in the Builth Wells. It will just make your journey all the more memorable.

A4069 – Black Mountain Pass

This is also called the Top Gear road since Jeremy Clarkson was once filmed driving through the swooping mountain pass. It is a favourite among test drivers, motorists, and bikers. It is best for you to start in the north and move down south. The breathtaking views of Tywi Valley can’t be missed on the way. Just remember to slow down every chance you get and enjoy one of the best roads in Britain.

The Abergwesyn Pass

This is a lonesome single track which stretches from Tregaron to Llanwrtyd Wells. You will find a landscape of escarpment, moors, scurrying streams, and pine forest. There is a steep series of hairpin turns in the middle called Devil’s Staircase. This isn’t a road built for speed. It’s 20 miles of road where you might not even see a single person at all.

This route will take you through the central massif of Snowdonia. You can do it any way you want, but the best experience comes doing it anti-clockwise. Start at Caernarfon and make your way through Rhyd-Ddu, Beddgelert, Pen y Gwryd, and Llanberis. The view here is second to none.
